Small of size and sparsely distributed throughout the dense wet forests of tropical Africa, the pygmy hippopotamus was unknown to western science until the mid 19th century. Known to local populations as “the water cow”, documentation of the pygmy hippo was complicated by its being confused with other species native to the forests of West Africa, including the giant forest hog and the West African manatee.
